Bay leaves are aromatic, herbal and slightly floral. Fresh or dried bay leaves are used in cooking for their distinctive flavor and fragrance. The leaves are often used to flavor soups, stews, braises and pâtés in Mediterranean cuisine.

The Bay leaf tree is a perennial evergreen tree, that can grow up to 8m in height and spreads to around 3m. Being evergreen harvesting of the leaves can be done throughout the year.

These leaves are added mainly to stocks, soups and stews around the world, and they are one of the ingredients of the “ Bouquet Garni”  ( a bundle of  aromatic herbs usually tied together or bound in a cheesecloth bag, and added in the preparation of fresh soups and stews) Bay leaves also blend well with certain types of fish like Salmon while poaching.

How to use Bay leaves

From meat to fish to vegetables and even puddings, there is no end to the uses of this amazing herb.  Can be used fresh or dried.

Helpful hints

Some interesting uses are to put fresh bay leaves in jars of uncooked rice to flavour the rice, or to add to your coals while having a “braai”.

Storage Instructions

Please keep refrigerated. Keep in the fridge for up to 1 week. Rinse before use.
